What to do if the Domain Name You Want is Taken

Today longer domain names are more acceptable. That opens the door to creative strategies in domain name creation. The following examples illustrate this point.

After the domain name cars.com was taken, someone who missed out on that name created carsdirect.com. After health.com became unavailable someone grabbed everydayhealth.com. The strategy used here is to add a prefix or suffix to the keyword that is no longer available and create a two-part or three-part domain name.

Here is a list of some common prefixes and suffixes and how they were used:
  • my - myspace.com, mymms.com, mycomputer.com
  • buy - shoebuy.com, buydomains.com, buyatoyota.com
  • point - pricepoint.com, luggagepoint.com, checkpoint.com
  • guide - searchengineguide.com, employmentguide.com, auctionguide.com
  • watch - marketwatch.com, pricewatch.com, searchenginewatch.com
  • reviews - cruisereviews.com, moviereviews.com
  • blueprint - fitnessblueprint.com, datablueprint.com, ultimatetrafficblueprint.com
Another strategy involves adding a common term/phrase to a desired keyword to create an easy-to-remember domain name. Here are examples of common term + keyword domain names:

  • for profit - cookingforprofit.com, blogforprofit.com, speakforprofit.com
  • go to - gotomypc.com, gotomeeting.com, gotopuertorico.com
  • learn to - learntodance.com, learntolead.com, learntolearn.com
As you watch television, listen to the radio and drive to and from home, be more observant of how domain names are created. Look carefully at store signs, billboards and “skyscrapers” for domain names and note anything creative about the names.

With research, time and a good measure of patience you will eventually find the domain name that best fits your business.
